2015 NFL Week 11 Preview: Washington Redskins at Carolina Panthers

In this 1 pm Week 11 NFL game, the 4-5 Washington Redskins travel to Carolina to play the Panthers who are 9-0. The Panthers are running well, while the Skins have been hit and miss all season.

Overview

Last week, the Redskins beat New Orleans 47-14. The week prior, the New England Patriots took the Skins to the cleaners as they beat Washington 27-10. Before that, the Redskins beat Tampa Bay 31-30. Washington will try to do something this week that they have not done all season, win teo in a row.

But the Skins are going up against the 9-0 Panthers. In their last three games they beat Tennessee (27-10), Green Bay (37-29), and Indianapolis (29-26). We’ll see how they do this week. One thing is for certain, this season the Panthers have always figured out a way to win.

The Game

Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins (67.9% COMP, 14 TDs, 9 INTs) comes into the game with a rating of 89.9. TE Jordan Reed has caught six touchdown passes and WR Pierre Garcon has three TD catches. The running game features Matt Jones. Jones has some decent stats that include 3.9 AVG, 3 TDs, and 3 runs for 20+. But he has also fumbled three times and lost all three of those balls. RB Chris Thompson is a dual threat. He’s averaging 8.9 YPA on the ground and 7.5 YPC. The Skins are averaging 22.8 PPG. That puts them in a deficit against the Panthers who are good for 28.8 PPG

What can help the Skins in this one is their ability to force turnovers. They’ve caused a dozen fumbles and recovered eight of them. On defense, Bashaud Breeland leads the club with eight passes defended and two interceptions. Still, the team’s defense overall is average at best and they are allowing 23.2 PPG.

On the other hand, the Carolina defense is allowing just 19.4 PPG. Their defense is very tough. They have 26 sacks, 14 picks and nine forced fumbles with six recoveries. Top D players include Kawann Short, who has six sacks, and Josh Norman has four interceptions and 14 TFL

That defense certainly helps QB Cam Newton (56.3% COMP, 15 TDs, 9 INTs) who has a QB rating of 84.8. Newton is averaging 4.5 yards per rush and has run for a half-dozen scores. RB Jonathan Stewart has gained 662 yards total and made 4 TD runs while averaging almost four yards per carry.

TE Greg Olsen and WR Ted Ginn Jr. are the top pass catchers. Olsen has 45 catches for 664 yards. He’s averaging a hefty 14.8 YPC and has 5 TDs and 13 catches for 20+ yards. Ginn is averaging 16.3 YPC and has three touchdown catches.

Betting On

The Panthers are at -7.5 and the over/under is 45. We like the under in this game. As far as the spread goes, it’s tempting to take the Skins. But we think the Panthers can exploit Washington’s less than average defense, while containing Cousins. Take the Panthers at -7.0.
