2015 NFL Thanksgiving Betting Preview – Three Picks for Sports Bettors

Every Thanksgiving the NFL offers a short list of games with three scheduled for this year’s turkey day. As usual, the Detroit Lions will play. They get the early game as Detroit hosts the Philadelphia Eagles at 12:30 pm. At 4:30 pm, the Dallas Cowboys will meet the Carolina Panthers in Texas. The final game of the day, which is scheduled for 8:30, has the Chicago Bears visiting Green Bay. That’s a lot of holiday action for NFL fans and sports bettors. We’re offering a pick on each game.

Philadelphia Eagles at Detroit Lions

The spread has the teams even, as the 4-6 Eagles visit the 3-7 Lions. The over/under is steady at 45.5. The team from the City of brotherly love has suffered a downswing lately, and, overall, they have been inconsistent this season. The Eagles have lost their last two contests with their most recent win coming against the Dallas Cowboys 33-27. Two weeks ago the Miami Dolphins beat them in a very close game 20-19, and this past week they were run over by the Tampa Bay Bucs 45-17.

The Lions are on an upswing, winning their past two contests. Both were exceptionally close, as they beat the Raiders 18-13 and Green Bay 18-16. Previous to those two wins, Detroit lost to the Chiefs 45-10 and Minnesota 28-19.

Philadelphia is at 0.00 in PF/PA, as they are averaging 22.9 PPG and allowing the same number of points per game. Detroit has had a tough time scoring, averaging 18.5 PPG. Their defense has been uneven, allowing 27.4 PPG. As far as injuries are concerned, both clubs are dealing with important losses. Eagle QB Sam Bradford is listed as day-to-day while the Lions find their best receiver, Calvin Johnson, being listed as questionable.

One important difference maker may be pass coverage, as the Eagle secondary outranks that of the Lions. This could be the factor that decides this game. Our pick is the Eagles and the under. A 25-15 score seems likely with Detroit losing at home.

Carolina Panthers at Dallas Cowboys

Will anyone stop the Carolina Panthers this season? The answer may come this week as the 10-0 team from Carolina travels to Texas to play the 3-7 Cowboys. Tony Romo is back at quarterback, and his return is monumental. After winning their first two games this season Dallas lost seven straight and part way through that series, Romo went down. Last week, he came back and guided the Cowboys to a 24-10 victory over the Dolphins.

The Cam Newton-led Panthers bring a very strong running attack to the field, and the unbridled athleticism of their quarterback makes them an exceptionally tough team to handle. Plus, the Panthers have one of the best defenses in the league. The Panther D has 31 sacks, 15 picks, and 57 PD. Also, they have notched 14 forced fumbles, recovering 10. The defense has scored three touchdowns.

Can Romo, who is aging and possibly prone to further injury, handle the physical pounding that Carolina is capable of wielding? The Cowboys have been averaging only about 19.0 PPG. They are giving up 22.8 PPG. Compare that to Carolina’s 29.9 PF and 19.1 PA.

The contest started with the Panthers favored by 1.5 points. Not the spread has these two clubs even. When push comes to shove we like Carolina. The over is preferred at 45.0. The totals started at 46.0.

Chicago at Green Bay

This game opened with Green Bay at -7.0. The spread is presently ranging from -8.0 to -10.0. Last week, the Packers, who are 7-3, won their first game in four tries, beating the Vikings 30-13. In their three prior losses they were 0-3 against the spread. The Bears are 2-2 in their past four. Their losses, which were to Denver and Minnesota, were by two and three points respectively. The two Bear wins were sandwiched between those losses, as they beat San Diego and St. Louis.

Chicago has been playing much better as of late, as their defense has stepped up. It’s true that Green Bay looked focused this past week, but a 10-point spread seems excessive. Earlier this season Green Bay beat Chicago 31-23. A similar score seems likely in this one.

Bet the Bears at +10.0, or better if you can find it, and the over at 46.0.

Betting Units

We’re suggesting three to four units on the Bears, two on Carolina, and two on the Eagles. Betting three units on the over in the Chicago-Green Bay game also makes sense here. Finally, wager another two units on the over in the Carolina-Dallas contest.
