Inside Predictions: Ohio State hosts Maryland in Big 10 Competition

This Saturday, October 10th at 12:00 PM EST, the Big 10 will see the Terrapins travel to face the #1 Buckeyes. The defending National Champions Ohio State, will host Maryland at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

The Maryland Terrapins are  2-3 but, 0-1 in Big 10; their loss to the Michigan Wolverines gave them that not so hot start. The Terrapins are playing in stark contrast to the Ohio State Buckeyes who are 5-0, and 1-0 in the Big 10. The Buckeyes beat the Indiana Hoosiers to get their Big 10 season started on the right foot.

Getting back to the Terrapins games against the Wolverines. Maryland went into the game as two touchdown underdogs and showed much better play than most expected. Granted they lost 0-28 but, they were only down by six points well into the third quarter. Their defense was superb, they held the majestic Wolverines at bay for most of the game, if the Terps offense would have been able to make something happen, the tables may have shifted into one of the hugest upsets of the season.

The Terps need to figure out what their answer to their quarterback problem will be. They are having a real hicup in that department. Quite simply, they can’t convert on third down. If they could, they would have a much stronger game, being that they would be able to move the ball down the field and, backed by a solid defense, the Terps would be in a real good position.

This game might not exactly be the game in which the Terps answer their QB question, as the Buckeyes have a great pass defense. Ohio State is ranked 11th in the nation, as far as defending against the pass. They are conceding an average of about a hair over 150 yards in the air per game. Regardless, the Terps would do well to test out a new passing setup.

Ohio State is home to the nation’s fourth highest ranked, and thus excellent, running back. Ezekiel Elliott has rushed for a whopping 729 yards and scored 8 touchdowns. He will be a key figure in this game and someone to keep a well fixed eye on. Barring any injuries or other game altering circumstances, we can be sure to be seeing Elliott in the NFL in a few years.

The Buckeyes are not exactly in the clear here though. They need to solve their problem in the red zone. Last year they were scoring 71.6% of the time they got to the red zone, this year it’s down to 37.5%. Those numbers are vastly different, if Ohio intends to really defend its Championship title this season, they will absolutely have to dig deep into this problem, find a solution, and properly implement it. Otherwise they will hard pressed to find what they are looking for in 2016.

Ohio may have an 18 game winning streak but they have failed to cover the spread in their last four consecutive matches. They are favored to win this one but, covering a -33½ point spread might me easier said than done.

My Prediction: The Terrapins play a hard game, they defend well and although their offense is not stellar, they are able to hold the powerful Buckeyes. In the end though Ohio wins the game by 20 points. My money is safely on the Terrapins plus the points.
