Washington Nationals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

The Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Wednesday for game three of their series between post-season hopefuls. The Pirates are -130 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under run total set at 7.
The Washington Nationals were picked by many to return to the post season but they have lost five games in a row and are sliding quickly down the standings. On Monday Wilson Ramos hit a home run and Bryce harper and Denard Span each had hits as the Nationals scored just one run on three hits. Starting pitcher Taylor Jordan allowed nine hits and five runs while striking out sour and lasting 7.2 innings but he took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season. For Wednesday game the Nationals look to stop the bleeding as they start Stephen Strasburg who has three no decisions, a win, and a loss in his last five starts. For the season Strasburg has allowed 92 hits and 38 earned runs while striking out 115 over 115.1 innings for a 5-7 record and a 2.97 ERA.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking to avoid the post All Star Game collapse they have had the past two seasons and have now won three in a row. Pedro Alvarez had two hits including his 25th home run, Russell Martin had three hits, and Andrew McCutchen had a hit as the Pirates scored five runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Gerit Cole stopped his losing streak as he allowed two hits and a run while striking out four over 7.0 innings to raise his record to 5-3 on the season. For Wednesday’s game the Pirates start Francisco Liriano who is having a Comeback Player of the Year type season. For the year Liriano has allowed 68 hits and 22 earned runs while striking out 84 over 81 innings for a 9-4 record and a 2.44 ERA.
Washington is 5-1 in their last six games after losing the first two game of their series, 0-5 in their last five home games, and 2-6 in Strasburg’s last eight starts against a team with a winning record. Pittsburgh is 8-2 in their last 10 games as an underdog, 10-4 in their last 14 road games, and 4-1 in Liriano’s last five starts.
While Strasburg is getting some backing by the public here it’s tough for me to take a team like the Nats who are struggling so badly and playing a team who are playing as well as the Pirates.
