New England Patriots vs. Miami Dolphins

The New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins face off on Sunday as they close out their 2012 NFL regular seasons. The Patriots are -11 point favorites over the Dolphins with an over/under point total set at 49.5.
The New England Patriots have plenty to play for in this one as with a win and a loss by the Denver Broncos they would become the number two seed in the AFC playoffs. The Patriots own the tiebreaker over the Broncos by beating them head to head but as of now they trail Denver by a game in the loss column. Tom Brady has completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 4,543 yards with 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions while being sacked 26 times. Stevan Ridley has averaged 4.4 yards per carry for 1,189 yards and 10 touchdowns and Danny Woodhead has averaged 3.9 yards per carry with four touchdowns. Wes Welker has 110 catches and five touchdowns, Brandon Lloyd has catches and four touchdowns, and Aaron Hernandez has 46 catches and five touchdowns. The Patriots defense allows 22.1 points, 105.5 rushing yards, and 275.5 passing yards with 19 interceptions and 30 sacks. Jerod Mayo has 142 tackles, Brandon Spikes has 92 tackles, and Devin McCourty has 78 tackles and five interceptions. This is a big rivalry game for the patriots so the stakes are raised even further.
The Miami Dolphins aren’t a playoff team but with a win they can finish at .500 for the year which would be no small accomplishment for them. Miami lost two games in overtime, both of which they missed field goals with chances to win, or else this season could have put them even further ahead of schedule. Ryan Tannehill has completed 58.4 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while being sacked 28 times. Reggie Bush needs 40 yards to go over 1,000 on the year averaging 4.4 yards per carry with six touchdowns and he has caught 33 passes with two more touchdowns. Brian Hartline has 69 catches, Davone Bess has 61 catches, and Anthony Fasano has 38 catches. Defensively the Dolphins have allowed 19.3 points, 1-4.5 rushing yards, and 246.5 passing yards with 10 interceptions and 41 sacks. Karlos Dansby has 121 tackles, Kevin Burnett has 99 tackles, and Cameron Wake has 15 sacks. Miami should be able to add a few more pieces in the offseason that could make them playoff contenders next year.
New England is 1-4 against the spread in their last five December games, 3-0-1 against the spread in week 17, and 5-2 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover the spread. Miami is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games overall, 7-2 against the spread against the AFC East, and 19-9-1 against the spread in their last 29 road games. Miami has covered the spread in four of their last five games in New England.
The number here is simply too big for a divisional rivalry game and there is nothing more that Miami wants to do than to ruin Tom Brady’s day and to gain the momentum to bring into the off season and next year.
