LSU Tigers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

The LSU Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecock face off on Saturday in Baton Rouge in a featured SEC game.  The Tigers are -4 point favorites over the Gamecocks.

The LSU Tigers are looking to bounce back from their first regular season loss in the last two seasons as they fell on Saturday at Florida. For the season QB Zach Mettenberger has completed 61.8 percent of his passes with six touchdowns and three interceptions but overall he has been somewhat of a disappointment. Kenny Hilliard is averaging 6.6 yards per carry with six touchdowns and Michael Ford is averaging 5.7 yards per carry with two touchdowns. Odell Beckham Jr. Leads the LSU receivers with 20 catches and two touchdowns, Jarvis Landry has 18 catches and a touchdown, and Kadron Boone has 10 catches with three of them being for touchdowns. Defensively LSU allows 12.8 yards per game, 98.5 rushing yards per game, and 122.5 passing yards per game with eight interceptions and 16 sacks. Kevin Minter has 54 tackles and two sacks, Lamin Barrow has 39 tackles, and Lavar Edwards has 3.5 sacks. It will be interesting to see how LSU rebounds from the loss and to see if the offense can muster anything against the stiff South Carolina defense.

The South Carolina Gamecocks control their own destiny in the SEC East after pummeling arch rival Georgia. QB Connor Shaw hasn’t put up huge numbers but he has been efficient completing 75.7 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing for 4.4 yards per carry and a touchdown. Marcus Lattimore continues to be a superstar as he is averaging 4.7 yards per carry and scoring nine touchdowns while catching 18 passes out of the backfield. Bruce Ellington has 13 catches and a touchdown, Ace Sanders has 12 catches and two touchdowns, and Damiere Byrd has 10 catches and two touchdowns. Defensively South Carolina is rock solid allowing 10.5 points per game, 83.8 rushing yards per game, and 194.2 passing yards per game with eight interceptions and 25 sacks. Shaq Wilson and Quin Smith each have 30 tackles and Jadeaveon  Clowney has 25 tackles and 6.5 sacks. This looks like it might be the best South Carolina team in recent memory.

LSU is 5-2 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover the spread, 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 SEC games, and 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 games against a team with a winning record. South Carolina is 7-0 against the spread following a win, 6-0 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five SEC games.

This should be a good one and the winner will undoubtedly be the defenses but LSU has looked vulnerable, not just in last week’s loss, and getting points in a game where points may be tough to come by is a solid choice.
