New York Mets vs. Pittsburg Pirates

The New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Monday for game one of their series at Citi Field.  The Mets are -120 favorites over the Pirates with an over/under run total set at 8.

The New York Mets have won three in a row and whiole the season will end with them near the bottom of the standings their sound play during the first half of the year is something they can build on for next season. The Mets are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 33-44 at home this season, and they are 23 games back in the NL East. As a team the Mets are hitting .250 with David Wright hitting .304, Daniel Murphy hitting .292, and Ruben Tejada hitting .287. As a team the Mets pitching staff has an  ERA of 4.15 with the starters at 3.86 and the bullpen at 4.76. For game one against the Pirates New York starts Jerry Meija who makes his fourth Major League appearance this year. Thus far Meija has allowed 10 hits and six earned runs while striking out just one over 6.0 innings for a 9.00 ERA.

The Pittsburgh Pirates looked to be a contender for the post season up until a few weeks back but a tailspin over the past month has all but sealed their fate as another season not making the post season. The Pirates are 3-7 in their last 10 games, 33-44 on the road this year, and 6.5 games out in the Wildcard. As a team the Pirates are hitting .244 with Andrew McCutchen hitting .336, Gaby Sanchez hitting .283, and Neil Walker hitting .277. As a team the Pirates pitching staff has an ERA of 3.94 with the starters at 4.23 and the bullpen at 3.41. For game one against the Mets Pittsburgh starts Kyle McPherson who has worked mostly from the bullpen. For the year McPherson has allowed 16 hits and four earned runs while striking out 13 over 16 innings of work for a 2.25 ERA.

New York is 17-35 in their last 52 home games, 6-1 in their last seven games against a team with a losing record, and 4-11 in their last 15 games overall. Pittsburgh is 17-35 in their last 52 games overall, 1-8 in their last nine games as an underdog, and 1-5 in their last six Monday games. Pittsburgh is 6-13 in the last 19 meetings of these two.

Both of these teams have been miserable recently and really over the past two months but I’ll give the Pirates a slight lean here.
