Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers

The Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers meet on Sunday in the Georgia Dome for an NFL NFC South game.  The Falcons are -7 point favorites over the Panthers with an over/under point total set at 50.

The Atlanta Falcons are one of three unbeaten teams left in the NFL this season and they have a two game lead in the always competitive NFC South. QB Matt Ryan has been outstanding completing 72 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and an interception. Michael Turner continues to be one of the toughest running backs in the NFL and he’s averaging 3.7 yards per carry with two touchdowns and Jacquizz Rodgers has 20 carries and seven catches with a touchdown. Tony Gonzalez leads the Falcons in receptions with 21 and three touchdowns, Roddy White has 19 catches, and Julio Jones has 15 catches and three touchdowns. Defensively Atlanta is allowing 16 points per game and they allow 128.7 rushing yards and 207.7 passing yards with seven sacks and seven interceptions. Stephen Nicholas has 27 tackles, Sean Weatherspoon has 22 tackles, and Thomas DeCoud has three interceptions. The Falcons have had a reasonable schedule thus far and it looks like this might be the year they get over the hump.

The Carolina Panthers still seem to be a work in progress looking spectacular at times and looking less than ordinary at others. The film appears to be out on QB Cam Newton who is mired in a bit of a sophomore slump completing 63.9 percent of his passes but he has five interceptions and two touchdowns while rushing for 81 yards and a touchdown. DeAngelo Williams is averaging 3.8 yards per carry to lead the Panthers rushing attack and Mike Tolbert has been used as a pass catcher catching nine passes. Steve Smith and Greg Olsen have 14 catches each and Brandon LaFell has 10 catches and a touchdown. The Panthers defense is allowing 26.3 points per game with 139.3 yards per game on the ground and 243.7 yards per game in the air with five sacks and two interceptions. James Anderson leads Carolina with 29 tackles, Charles Godfrey has 26 tackles, and Dwan Edwards has 3.5 sacks. The Panthers were crushed last time out by the Giants at home and this will be a tough spot to try and bounce back.

Atlanta is 3-0-1 against the spread in their last four home games, 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five home games against a team with a losing record, and 1-5 against the spread following a win of 14 or more points. Carolina is 5-2 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover the spread, 4-10 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 4-1 against the spread following a game where they allowed 30 or more points their previous game. The home team has covered in six of the last eight meetings of these two.

The total in this one is set at 50 and this is a division game which means the hitting is just a little harder and the play more intense and look for this one to come in under the total.
