For the season Verlander has allowed 117 hits and 47 earned runs while striking out 152 over 160.2 innings of work for a 2.63 ERA.

The New York Yankees are tied for the best record in the American League as they head into the stretch drive of the season. The Yankees are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 29-22 on the road this year, and they have a 6.5 game lead in the AL East. As a team the Yankees are hitting .264 with Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter both at .314 and Ichiro Suzuki at .261. As a team the Yankees pitching staff has an ERA of 3.73 with the starters at 3.96 and the bullpen at 3.17. For game one in Detroit New York starts Ivan Nova who hasn’t won since the All Star break. For the season Nova has allowed 149 hits and 67 earned runs while striking out 119 over 133 innings of work for a 4.53 ERA.

Detroit is 12-1 in their last 13 games as a home favorite, 19-8 in their last 27 games overall, and 46-14 in Verlander’s last 40 home starts. New York is 2-5 in their last seven road games, 1-6 in their last seven games against a team with a winning record, and 21-6 in Nova’s last 27 starts. Detroit is 1-6 in Verlander’s last seven starts against New York.

The Yankees have Verlander’s number but normally he faces Sabathia and here against Nova he’s the pick as Nova hasn’t been good at all of late.
