Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels

The Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels close out their series in Detroit on Sunday.  The Tigers are -135 favorites over the Angels with an over/under run total set at 10.

The Detroit Tigers are battling for a post season spot and while Saturday was starting to look like a lost cause they battled back for the win. Prince Fielder and Delmon Young had three hits each and Andy Dirks added two hits as the Tigers scored five runs on 14 hits in all. On the mound Drew Smyly allowed just four hits and three runs while striking out six over six innings but didn’t factor in the decision as Octavio Dotel got the win and Jose Valverde earned his 26th save. Fir Sunday’s series finale Detroit starts max Scherzer who has won his last three starts. For the year Scherzer has allowed 151 hits and 70 earned runs while striking out 186 over 147.2 innings of work for a 4.27 ERA.

The Los Angeles Angels need to win in bunches to have any kind of shot at the post season but they weren’t able to hold on and get a win on Saturday. Vernon Wells hit a home run, Howard Kendrick had two hits, and Alberto Callespo had a hit as the Angels scored three runs on six hits. On the mound starting pitcher Dan Haren pitched well allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out seven over 5.2 innings to not factor in the decision as Garrett Richards took the loss after blowing the save. For Sunday’s game Los Angeles starts Ervin Santana who has won his last three decisions. For the season Santana has allowed 139 hits and 86 earned runs while striking out 95 over 141.2 innings of work for a 5.46 ERA.

Detroit is 7-2 in their last nine games as a favorite, 21-6 in their last 27 home games, and 21-8 in Scherzer’s last 29 home starts. Los Angeles is 4-1 in their last five games overall, 2-6 in their last eight game three of a series, and 3-10 in Santana’s last 13 starts against a team with a winning record. Los Angeles is 4-1 in Santana’s last five starts against the Tigers.

The total in this one is set at 10 and I have it coming in under that total.
