Oakland Athletics vs. Toronto Blue Jays

The surging Oakland Athletics continue their series with the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.  The Blue Jays are -120 favorites over the Athletics with an over/under run total set at 8.5.

Oakland might not catch Texas in the American League West race but the Angels certainly have their eyes on them with good reason. The Athletics might be the hottest team in the game after a 7-2 victory over Toronto on Tuesday was sixth straight and 10th in eleven contests. In this stretch the A’s are getting the job done at both the plate and on the mound with both units getting the job done Tuesday.Travis Blackley gave up a single run on just five hits and eight strike outs over seven frames. The bats connected on nine hits and walked four times with Derek Norris clubbing a two run homer while Yoenis Cespedes drove in three runs. Rookie AJ Griffin takes the ball Wednesday looking for win number three on the season. Griffin has five starts  under his belt and all meet the definition of quality with the Athletics going 4-1 in this span.

Toronto clubbed Boston for a three game sweep which enabled the Blue Jays to escape the American League East basement. However, the good times ended Tuesday in a 7-2 defeat at the hands of Oakland. When Toronto is playing well, the runs are generally scoring in bunches and their pitching just has to be adequate. Neither unit was adequate Tuesday with starter Brett Cecil throwing well enough to win with a pair of runs allowed over six innings before two relievers gave up two runs each. The offense totaled eight hits and a walk but broke in to the scoring column on solo homers from JJ Arencibia and Travis Snyder. Left hander Ricky Romero gets the starting nod Wednesday needing to turn his season around. Romero is riding  five game slide and has just three quality starts to his credit in ten outings.

I could argue that Griffin is the better hurler but he has had limited opportunities although Romero has been struggling all season which is a surprise. I think taking a shot with the hot Athletics is the way to go.
