Baltimore Orioles vs. Tampa Bay Rays

The Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Thursday as they close out their series at Camden Yards. The Orioles are -120 favorites over the Rays with an over/under run total set at 9.
The Baltimore Orioles are now tied with the Rays in the AL East but both of them are on the outside looking in at the post season. On Wednesday J.J. Hardy and Omar Quintanilla both had two hits and Adam Jones added a hit as the Orioles scored just one run on seven hits. On the mound Miguel Gonzalez allowed seven hits and seven runs while striking out two and getting outright shelled as he lasted just 2.2 innings. For Thursday’s game Baltimore starts Chris Tillman who has won two of his last three starts but has surrendered just two runs over that span. For the season Tillman has allowed 13 hits and two earned runs while striking out 12 over 15.2 innings of work for a 1.15 ERA.
The Tampa Bay Rays took until the final game of last season to make the post season and if they are going to make it this year they may need as much time. On Wednesday Desmond Jennings, Ryan Roberts, and Jose Lobaton all homered as the Rays racked up 10 runs on 11 hits. On the mound David Price put in another big effort allowing seven hits and a run while striking out 10 over seven innings of work to move his record to 14-4 for the year. For Thursday’s game Tampa Bay starts James Shields who hasn’t allowed less than three runs in any of his last seven starts. For the season Shields has allowed 150 hits and 64 earned runs while striking out 124 over 131.1 innings of work for a 4.39 ERA.
Baltimore is 4-1 in their last five games as an underdog, 1-6 in their last seven home games, and 7-2 in Tillman’s last nine home starts. Tampa Bay is 5-13 in their last 18 games as a favorite, 0-7 in their last seven game three of a series, and 1-5 in Shields’ last six starts as a favorite. The Rays are 7-1 in Shields’ last eight starts against Baltimore.
The Rays are just playing well this series and Shields own the Orioles and though he hasn’t been at his best this year look for him and the Rays to be good enough here.
