Villanova Wildcats vs. Pennsylvania Quakers

The Villanova Wildcats and the Penn Quakers battle it out in Philadelphia on Saturday.  The Wildcats are -14.5 point favorites over the Quakers with an over/under point total set at 132.

Jay Wright’s Villanova Wildcats have been a fixture in the college basketball top 25 rankings for years and while this team is talented, they aren’t an “automatic” like years past. Like most college programs go through, Villanova still has some great talent, it’s just that they lost some leaders who were with the team for several years so it’s rebuilding not just on the court but in the locker room as well. Maalik Wayns is averaging 20.0 points. 4.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists, Mouphtaou Yarou is averaging 15.2 points and 8.0 rebounds, Dominic Cheek is averaging 13.8 points and 5.0 rebounds, and James Bell is averaging 10.0 points. As a team Villanova is averaing 77.3 points and they are shooting 45.2 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 66.5 percent and their opposition shoots 40.0 percent from the floor. Villanova is coming off of two consecutive losses but they haven’t lost at home this year.

The Penn Quakers have once again scheduled big out of conference but Jerome Allen’s team hasn’t played big enough to handle it as of yet. Penn won last time out beating Manhattan but that was preceded by three losses including a 20 point loss to Pitt. Zach Rosen is averaging 21.4 points and 5.6 assists, Tyler Bernadini is averaging 12.5 points and 5.9 rebounds, and Miles Cartwright is averaging 11.1 points and 3.2 rebounds. As a team Penn is averaging 65.8 points and they shoot 44 percent from the floor while defensively they allow 66.4 points per game and their opponents shoot 41.9 percent. With Harvard looking strong again this season Penn will have their work cut out for them in the Ivy League.

Villanova is 17-35 against the spread following a loss, 1-5 against the spread in their last six non-conference games, and 1-10 against the spread in their last 11 home games. Penn is 8-1 against the spread in their last nine games as an underdog of 13 points or more, 5-2 against the spread following a win, and 2-7 against the spread in their last nine against the Big East.

Villanova should get it done as they are just tough at home and are clearly the more talented team here but this is just one of those cases where it’s just too many points.
