Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Wisconsin Badgers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers play their first Big Ten Conference game ever as they host the Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday night.  The Badgers are -8.5 point favorites over the Cornhuskers with an over/under point total set at 104.5.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have won their last four games but it’s tough to say anything they have seen this season has prepared Doc Sadler’s team for what the will see in the coming weeks.  The Huskers haven’t defeated a team with an RPI better than 50 but their next few weeks’ schedule is loaded with teams ranked in the top 25. Bo Spencer is averaging 16 points and 4.3 assists, Brian Jorge Diaz is averaging 10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds, Toney McCray is averaging 9.3 points and 4.1 rebounds, and Brandon Ubel is averaging 7.1 points and 6.4 rebounds. As a team Nebraska is averaging 66.8 points and they are shooting 45 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 61.1 points and their opponents shoot 40.8 percent. With this game against the Badgers followed by Michigan State, Ohio State, and Illinois there isn’t going to be a break for the Huskers for quite some time.

The Wisconsin Badgers have won five games in a row and though Bo Ryan’s team is ranked in the top 25 and are one of the top defensive teams in the nation in every category, they know they have a lot of work to do between now and March. Wisconsin’s schedule is loaded with games against teams ranked in the top 25 but they are just 1-2 against top 25 teams thus far and 1-1 on the road. Jared Berggren is averaging 12.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, Jordan Taylor is averaging 12.2 points and 3.9 rebounds, Ben Brust is averaging 10.8 points, and Ryan Evans is averaging 9.9 points and 7.0 rebounds. As a team the Badgers are averaging 68.2 points and they are shooting 45.6 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing a nation’s best 44.7 points and their opponents are shooting a nation’s worst 33.5 percent. Wisconsin makes it tough on their opponents’ offense but they may need to ramp things up and make it tougher on their opponents’ defense if they want to shake things up in the Big Ten this season.

Nebraska is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games against Big Ten teams, 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games, and 2-6 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Wisconsin is 7-1 against the spread following a win, 2-5 against the spread against the Big Ten, and 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 games overall.

Wisconsin is listed as an 8.5 point favorite and in what looks to be a ridiculously low scoring game this may be a few too many points as closer to five looks to be about right.
