Texas Longhorns vs. North Carolina St. Wolfpack

The NC State Wolfpack and the Texas Longhorns face off on Monday at East Rutherford, New Jersey for the Legends Classic.  The Longhorns are -2.5 point favorites over the Wolfpack.

In the early going this Rick Barnes’ Texas Longhorns are putting up big numbers offensively but unfortunately they are allowing their opponents to put up big numbers as well. Texas won their first two games of the year before falling to Oregon State last time out. The Horns need to replace a bunch this season but J’Covan Brown is averaging 29.3 points per game, 5.3 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game. Myck Kabongo is averaging 12.3 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game, and 6.3 assists, Julien Lewis is averaging 12 points, and Jonathan Holmes is averaging 10 points per game. As a team Texas is averaging 92.3 points and they shoot 49.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 78.7 points per game and their opponents shoot 41.1 percent. Texas lost some of the best talent in the nation but like most top tier programs they have replacements but it’s a matter of getting them some experience.

The NC State Wolfpack started the season with three wins but when Mark Gottfried’s team was called upon to step it up against Vanderbilt they came up short. Richard Howell is leading North Carolina State averaging 16.2 points and 10.2 rebounds. DeShawn Painter is averaging 12.2 points and 5.5 rebounds, Lorenzo Brown is averaging 11.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game, and C.J. Williams is averaging 11 points and 4.2 rebounds. As a team the NC State offense is averaging 78.5 points per game and shoot 50.4 percent from the floor while their opposition is scoring 70 points per game and shoot 41.4 percent. There will be some growing pains and inconsistencies for the Wolfpack this season but this is a program never short on talent on the hardwood.

Texas is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games following a game which they didn’t cover, 0-5 against the spread in their last five games overall, and 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games against the ACC. NC State is 5-16 against the spread in their last 21 games as an underdog, 1-9-1 against the spread following a loss, and 3-13 against the spread in their last 16 games against a team with a winning record.

This should be a high scoring game and despite the Longhorns inability to defend NC State might just not be good enough to keep up in this track meet.
