Ryan Fitzpatrick out vs. Colts, Tom Savage in
Ryan Fitzpatrick is out of Sunday’s game against the Colts. Rookie Tom Savage has replaced him at quarterback.
Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has left Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts with what appears to be an injury to his left ankle. Fitzpatrick went down late in the first quarter and was replaced by rookie fourth-round pick Tom Savage. Fitzpatrick will not return to the game, the team announced.
This will be Savage’s first real NFL action. He’s taken part in a couple of snaps in a game against the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 30, but has not yet attempted a pass in the NFL. He’ll be the third quarterback to take significant snaps for the Texans this season, behind Fitzpatrick and Ryan Mallett, who is out for the season.
Fitzpatrick has completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 2,453 yards with 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He’s played well enough to have the Texans sitting at 7-6 on the season, second in the AFC South and fighting for a spot in the postseason. Because the Colts can clinch the division with a win over the Texans, Savage is now playing in what is essentially a playoff game.
