Rajon Rondo thanks Boston fans on Facebook

Rajon Rondo was finally traded from Boston, and a graceful exit to join the Dallas Mavericks included a ‘thank you’ post to Celtics fans.

It was time to say ‘goodbye.’ After several years of rumors, the Boston Celtics finally pulled the trigger on a deal to send Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks.

Though it was a long-time coming, the deal still likely grabs at Boston fans’ hearts. Rondo, after all, was the final piece to go of the Celtics’ championship-caliber teams that won it all in 2008.

Rondo went to Facebook to thank Boston’s fans for their eight-plus years of support.

My time in Boston has meant so much. I’ve grown up with this city both as a basketball player and a person. The love I have for the most loyal and supportive fans in the league is unmatched. My teammates have shown nothing but heart the last couple of seasons, they are some of the hardest working guys I’ve played with and I wish them the best. I’m happy to have experienced my most successful and challenging years with the Celtics organization, fans and city. The opportunity to play with guys like Dirk, Monta, Tyson, and the young talent of Chandler is very exciting and I look forward to building something special in Dallas.

Celtics president Danny Ainge sent Rondo to the Mavericks in exchange for Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson, plus first- and second-round picks in the deal. It may not appear to be a great haul, but after Rondo’s ACL tear nearly two years ago, the market for the enigmatic point guard waned.

Now, it’s on to seeing how Rondo fits in with Dirk Nowitzki and crew as they make a push up the tough Western Conference ladder.
