Patriots using Dolphins’ quotes from Week 1 as motivation
The Dolphins told reporters in September that the Patriots quit in a Week 1 loss and those quotes are being used as motivation for Week 15.
The New England Patriots can clinch the AFC East with a win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 15, but it’s also an opportunity at redemption after the Dolphins earned a 33-20 victory when the two teams met in Week 1.
After leading 20-10 in the season opener, the Patriots were shut out in the second half and allowed 23 unanswered points to the Dolphins. Following the game, several Dolphins players talked to the media about the come-from-behind victory and some said the Patriots quit when momentum swung in Miami’s favor.
Those quotes have since become a source of motivation for the Patriots, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
On screens inside Patriots’ training facility, NE displayed quotes from Miami players after they beat Patriots in opener, about how Patriots quit, about how they took it to them. Each Patriot was able to repeatedly walk past and read the multitude of quotes the Miami players said about them after the opener.
After starting the season 2-2, the Patriots have won eight of the last nine games and have a three-game lead over the Dolphins with three games left to play. The Dolphins followed the Week 1 victory with back-to-back losses and sit at 7-6 after a 28-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14.
While a win over the Patriots would still mean the AFC East title is a long shot, it would keep the Dolphins in the thick of the playoff race. With home games against the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets to finish the season, Miami still has a realistic shot at a Wild Card berth.
