NHL reportedly targeting Boston for 2016 NHL Winter Classic
It would be the second time Boston has hosted the event.
With the 2015 NHL Classic just weeks away, the NHL is already planning for the next version of its most popular regular season event. According to one report, the league is eyeing a return visit to Boston.
According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the NHL is currently working on bringing the 2016 NHL Winter Classic to Boston for the second time since the event was created. The Bruins previously hosted the Classic at Fenway Park in 2010 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
No announcement is imminent and there’s no word on which venue would be used for the game. Gillette Stadium could be an option, although it’s located in nearby Foxboro, south of Boston. There’s always the chance the NHL would play in Fenway again, but the league has played the Classic in different venues each year up to this point.
As for other Stadium Series locations, McKenzie also reported that the league is looking at Denver and Minnesota as possibilities. Winnipeg is a potential host for the Heritage Classic.
