NCAA basketball rankings 2014: Virginia cracks top 5, TCU makes first appearance since 1999

For the third straight week, Kentucky is the unanimous No. 1 team in the country. The team claiming this week’s final spot in the AP Top 25, however, is much more surprising.

Apparently limiting Harvard to 1-of-20 shooting in the first half and beating the Crimson by almost 50 points was just what Virginia needed to do crack the top five of the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Cavaliers earned 14 more votes than Wisconsin, allowing them to slip past the Badgers and into the top five for the first time this season.

As expected, Kentucky is still the AP’s unanimous No. 1 team, garnering all 65 first-place votes. The Wildcats are followed in the poll by the same trio of Duke, Arizona and Louisville that has sat behind them in each of the past two weeks.

Perhaps the most notable takeaway from this week’s poll is that TCU, just one season removed from going 0-18 in the Big 12 and 9-22 overall, checks in at No. 25. The Horned Frogs moved to 11-0 on the year by hammering UT San Antonio, 88-57, on Saturday.

It’s safe to say the folks in Fort Worth were excited by the news.

The excitement is understandable, given that this is TCU’s first poll appearance since Jan. 26, 1999.
