Keenan Allen injury update: Chargers WR out, other options lacking in fantasy value

Keenan Allen has been ruled out for Saturday’s game against the 49ers. We break down the fantasy implications.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen was ruled out for Saturday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Allen is dealing with ankle and collarbone injuries. That means that Malcom Floyd, Eddie Royal and Seyi Ajirotutu will comprise the top three receivers in San Diego, alongside tight end Antonio Gates.

Allen has been banged up over the past couple weeks, and as a result, has been largely ineffective. He was targeted nine times but caught just three passes against the Denver Broncos in Week 15, putting up 18 yards with no scores. The previous week, he saw just three targets, catching two passes for 3 yards. Prior to that, he caught 11 of 14 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy Impact: Losing Allen, San Diego’s leading receiver, hurts the team and, obviously, fantasy owners. Allen has caught 77 passes for 783 yards and four touchdowns this year, leading in all categories but the latter — Gates has 10 touchdown receptions. San Francisco’s pass defense is a tough one, so Philip Rivers, who is banged up himself, will have his work cut out for him. Floyd has 777 yards and five touchdowns, Royal has just 589 yards and six touchdowns and Ajirotutu has 36 yards this season.
