Jets vs. Vikings 2014 picks and predictions: Experts flock to Minnesota
Few are picking Rex Ryan’s moribund Jets.
It’s hard to disappoint Jets fans 13 weeks into a two-win season, but somehow New York found a way last Monday. The Jets jumped out to a 10-point lead over the heavily favored Miami Dolphins early in the second quarter, but Rex Ryan’s refusal to allow Geno Smith to throw the ball allowed the Dolphins to fight back into the game. Even a rare 100-yard rushing performance by Chris Johnson wasn’t enough to salt away the clock, and the Jets lost 16-13. That doesn’t seem likely to change this week as New York has yet to win a game on the road this season.
Meanwhile, the Vikings have quietly played well the past month and a half. They held three consecutive opponents to below 20 points and have won three of their last five games. Mike Zimmer’s retooled defense has led the charge with rookie Anthony Barr looking like a world-beater. Barr’s strong play has convinced some that he’ll win Defensive Player of the Year honors at the end of the season.
Understandably, the home team is the popular pick this week. All but one of ESPN’s 13 experts are going with the Vikings while six members of CBS Sports‘ eight-man panel have them taking out the Jets.
CBS Sports senior writer Pete Prisco had this to say about the game:
The Jets threw it 13 times against the Dolphins on Monday night. Even by Rex Ryan’s standards, that’s low. That’s saying something. You can’t win games that way. But you can stay close. They will here, but they just won’t win it.
