Jerry Jones thinks Tony Romo should be NFL MVP
Romo leads the NFL in passer rating and completion percentage in 2014, and the Cowboys believe that should earn the quarterback NFL MVP honors.
The Dallas Cowboys clinched the NFC East crown on Sunday with a third straight win and complete dismantling of the Indianapolis Colts. Leading the way was Tony Romo, who finished with four touchdown passes and just two incomplete passes en route to a 42-7 victory.
With the performance, Romo bumped his passer rating up to 114.4 and his completion percentage up to 70.3, both of which lead the NFL. In fact, Romo’s passer rating currently ranks as the sixth-best in a single season in NFL history, just 0.7 behind Peyton Manning’s 115.1 passer rating in 2013 that earned the Denver Broncos quarterback NFL MVP honors.
Just one game is left for Romo to put the finishing touches on arguably the best season of his career, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has seen enough to think that the quarterback is the NFL’s MVP for the 2014 season:
“Yes, he is, because [DeMarco] Murray has certainly carried his share, but Tony’s quarterbacking this year was indispensable. We couldn’t have had the team, and we have a team that probably right now is in the top four or five teams in the league. That’s pretty good qualification of the vote.”
One of only four losses endured by the Cowboys came earlier in the year when a back injury for Romo forced Brandon Weeden to start in his place against the Arizona Cardinals. Weeden completed 18-of-33 passes with one touchdown and two interceptions in the 28-17 loss.
With Romo at the helm, the team is 11-3 and earned its first NFC East title since 2009. Despite a back injury, Romo showed “he can take over” and lead a team to victory, although he’s certainly been aided by the play of DeMarco Murray. The running back leads the NFL in rushing attempts, yards and touchdowns, but Cowboys players point to the quarterback as the player that deserves honors for his play.
“Hell yeah, he is. He’s the MVP,” said receiver Dez Bryant, who caught his 14th touchdown pass of the season Sunday. “Look at the performance. He’s giving ‘em hell in December. Icing on the cake. Give it to him. He’s doing a hell of a job.”
Jeremy Mincey: “Romo is playing lights out. Romo should be the MVP. Nobody’s putting the icing on the cake like Romo is right now.”

Romo hasn’t earned a trip to the Pro Bowl since the Cowboys last won the NFC East five seasons ago, although he has a good chance at earning the distinction in 2014.
