Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde injury updates: 49ers’ RBs banged up; fantasy value low

Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde are both dealing with injuries heading into Saturday’s game against the Chargers. We break down the fantasy implications.

San Francisco 49ers running backs Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde are banged up this week, and are unlikely to play in Saturday’s game against the San Diego Chargers. Gore was still going through the league’s concussion protocol late in the week, while Hyde has ankle and back injuries and missed multiple practices.

The 49ers wound up signing running back Phillip Tanner off the street, and Alfonso Smith seems like he could be making the start in Saturday’s game. Gore, the starter, left San Francisco’s Week 15 game against the Seattle Seahawks after picking up just 29 yards on 11 carries. It’s been a tough season for the veteran back, despite playing in every game to this point, with just 804 yards on 204 carries — a per-carry average of 3.9 yards.

Fantasy Impact: Whatever the case, it doesn’t seem likely that Gore plays Saturday. Hyde, who is third on the team (behind quarterback Colin Kaepernick) with 333 yards and four touchdowns, also doesn’t seem like a safe bet. If fantasy owners are desperate for a 49ers’ running back to start, then it will likely be Smith, who has just four carries on the season.
