Fantasy football waiver wire, Week 17: Matt Asiata has big day

The Minnesota running back has had a wildly up-and-down season. We break down the fantasy implications.

Minnesota Vikings running back Matt Asiata has nine rushing touchdowns this year after Sunday. Those nine have come in only four games. This is a guy who lumps his production together, and he did so Sunday in the Vikings’ 37-35 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Asiata ran the ball 16 times Sunday for 58 yards and two touchdowns, adding 19 receiving yards on three catches. He also scored on a crucial two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, that at the time tied the game. All told, that made 20 fantasy points for Asiata on Sunday, his third 20-point game of the season.

Fantasy impact: Three games this season of 20-plus fantasy points is more than Alfred Morris, more than LeSean McCoy, more than Mark Ingram or Joique Bell or Jeremy Hill. The problem is that Asiata also has plenty of one- and two-point fantasy games sandwiches around those big games.

If you’re heading into a Week 17 fantasy final and think you’re an underdog who needs to swing for the fences, Asiata would be a decent pickup, as he could go off or he could produce nothing. He’s not much of a week-to-week option, but if you’re digging deep he’s not bad.
