Broncos vs. Chargers 2014 picks and predictions: Experts favoring Denver to clinch AFC West
The Denver Broncos can clinch the AFC West with a win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
The Denver Broncos fielded the most productive offense the NFL has ever seen last season, but they have been struggling in some key areas in recent weeks. Notably, scoring from inside the red zone has eluded them, or at least it did prior to their Week 14 game against the Buffalo Bills. That game saw Peyton Manning’s 51-game touchdown streak come to an end, but it did see running back C.J. Anderson score three times from within the red zone.
They’ll need to keep the scoring production up if they want to hold off the AFC West rival San Diego Chargers on Sunday. San Diego is 8-5 and still holding onto hopes of winning the division or winning a wild card spot. Denver, on the other hand, can lock up a playoff berth and the division with a win or a tie on Sunday.
Denver is actually playing for a first-round bye in the playoffs as well, though that requires a win and some other things going right in other games. San Diego may have a better shot at a wild card berth, but they can’t afford to lose this game given how strong the entire AFC North is looking. That division could easily see three representatives.
But the Chargers came up short in Week 14, snapping a three-game winning streak by falling to the New England Patriots. With games against the San Francisco 49ers and the rival Kansas City Chiefs still on the schedule, San Diego desperately needs a win in this game.
Over at ESPN, nine of the 13 experts picking this game think the Broncos will win it and clinch the division. It’s a similar spread at CBS Sports, where six of the eight experts think the Broncos will come out victorious. Finally, Fox Sports has a similar spread, with four of the six experts going with Denver.
Here at SB Nation, it’s even more lopsided, with just one of the experts picking San Diego. David Fucillo must know something the rest of them don’t:
