St. Louis Cardinals vs. Kansas City Royals
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals face off on Monday at Bush Stadium in game one of their interleague rivalry series. The Cardinals are -165 favorites over the Royals.
The St. Louis Cardinals are hoping that their best baseball is in front of them as they haven’t been able to win consistently. The Cardinals are 16-12 at home, 4-6 in their last 10 games, and they are four games back in the NL Central. As a team the Cardinals are hitting .255 with Matt Adams hitting .325, Yadier Molina hitting .309, and Matt Carpenter hitting .291. The Cardinals pitching staff has an ERA of 3.34 with the starters at 3.09 and the bullpen at 3.89. For game one against the Royals St. Louis starts Shelby Miller who has lost his last two starts. For the season Miller has allowed 58 hits and 27 earned runs while striking out 46 over 61.2 innings for a 6-4 record and a 3.94 ERA.
The expectations were high coming into this season for the Kansas City Royals but thus far we haven’t seen them live up to them. The Royals are 13-16 on the road, 3-7 in their last 10 games, and they are in last place in the AL Central. As a team the Royals are hitting .253 with Alex Gordon hitting .276, Eric Hosmer hitting .271, and Alcides Escobar hitting .265. The Kansas City pitching staff has a 3.90 ERA with the starters at 4.02 and the bullpen at 3.66. For game one against the Cards K.C. starts Danny Duffy who has lost four of his last five starts. For the season Duffy has allowed 27 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out 24 over 35.1 innings for a 2-5 record and a 3.57 ERA.
St. Louis is 7-1 against a team with a winning record, 2-5 in game one of a series, and 7-2 in Miller’s last nine home starts. Kansas City is 4-0 in their last four interleague games, 2-6 in their last eight games, and 6-2 in Duffy’s last eight road starts. Kansas City is 1-6 in the last seven games against St. Louis.
This game looks like a coin flip to me which says take a shot at the Royals and the odds in what is a lean at best.
