St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs face off on Tuesday at Busch Stadium for game two of their series. The Cardinals are -240 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 7.
The St. Louis Cardinals have struggled at the plate this season but on Monday they were beaten in every area of the game. Yadier Molina had two hits and Matt Holliday and Allen Craig each had hits as the Cardinals scored five runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Tyler Lyons allowed nine hits and nine runs while striking out two and lasting just four innings to take the loss and fall to 0-3 for the season. For Tuesday’s game the Cardinals start Adam Wainwright who is having another season that establishes him as one of the best pitchers in baseball. For the season Wainwright has allowed 40 hits and 13 runs while striking out 52 over 58 innings for a 6-2 record and a 2.02 ERA.
The Chicago Cubs are having a frustrating season and they took out a lot of that frustration on the Cardinals on Monday. Mike Olt and Junior Lake hit home runs, Emilio Bonifacio had four hits, and Lake, Starlin Castro, and Darwin Barney each had three hits as the Cubs scored 17 runs on 20 hits. Starting pitcher Travis Wood allowed five hits and four runs while striking out four over 6.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 3-4 for the season. For Tuesday’s game the Cubs start Jake Arrieta who doson’t have a decision this season. For the year Arrieta has allowed 13 hits and three earned runs while striking out eight over 9.1 innings for a 2.89 ERA.
St. Louis is 39-19 as a home favorite, 45-20 at home, and 23-9 in Wainwright’s last 32 home starts. Chicago is 23-45 as an underdog, 16-36 in their last 52 games, and 5-0 in Arrieta’s last five starts. Chicago is 9-22 in their last 31 games in St. Louis.
The Cardinals are a huge favorite here and rightfully so as they get some measure of revenge.
