Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Temple Owls
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Temple Owls open their AAC college basketball schedules on Wednesday with a New Year’s Day matchup. The Owls are -2 point favorites over the Scarlet Knights.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have had a rough go of it through the first part of their season as their defense is too soft to beat the better teams. RU is 1-5 against teams with a RPI better than 200 and they are just 6-5 at home this season. Myles Mack leads the Scarlet Knights averaging 16.5 points and 4.3 assists per game. Kadeem Jack is averaging 14 points and 7.1 rebounds, J.J. Moore is averaging 12.3 points, and Jerome Seagears is averaging 9.5 points. Rutgers is averaging 77.7 points and they are shooting 45.3 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 76.4 points and their opponents are shooting 43 percent. Rutgers has played the 132nd ranked schedule and it will get increasingly difficult as they play the AAC.
The Temple Owls are usually competitive with just about anyone in the college basketball world but this year they don’t appear to be a typical Temple team. Temple is 5-5 having played the 64th ranked schedule but they have played just three home games so far this season. Will Cummings leads the Owls averaging 17.7 points and 4.6 assists per game. Dalton Pepper is averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds, Quenton DeCosey is averaging 14.7 points, and Anthony Lee is averaging 14.4 points and 9.5 rebounds. Temple is averaging 81 points and they are shooting 46.7 percent while defensively they are allowing 75.3 points and their opponents are shooting 41.9 percent. Temple won last time out to end a two game losing skid.
Rutgers is 15-37-1 against the spread in their last 53 Wednesday games and 5-13 against the spread in their last 18 home games. Temple is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 road games, 1-6 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 4-1 against the spread following a win.
Rutgers is simply horrible while Temple’s results have a lot to do with scheduling so I give the Owls the nod here.
