Fresno St. Bulldogs vs. UNLV Rebels
The Fresno State Bulldogs and the UNLV Rebels face off on Wednesday as they open their MWC college basketball schedules. The Rebels are -4.5 point favorites over the Bulldogs.
The Fresno State Bulldogs are 7-6 on the season but they are 6-1 at home and have played the 31st ranked schedule in the nation. FSU has three games against teams with a RPI of 50 or better but they have lost them all. Marvelle Harris leads the Bulldogs averaging 16 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Cezar Guerrero is averaging 14 points and 4.3 assists, Paul Watson is averaging 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds, and Allen Huddleston is averaging 10.8 points. Fresno State is averaging 76.2 points and they are shooting 46.4 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 71.5 points and their opponents are shooting 43.4 percent. Fresno State’s schedule should be slightly less difficult as they get deeper into Mountain West play.
It looks to be a rebuilding year for the UNLV Rebels as while they aren’t horrible, they just aren’t at the level we have seen them at in recent years. UNLV is 9-4 for the season and 1-1 on the road so far. Roscoe Smith leads the Rebels averaging 13.1 points and 13.2 rebounds per game. Bryce Dejean-Jones is averaging 12.5 points, Khem Birch is averaging 11.8 points and 9.4 rebounds, and Kevin Olekaibe is averaging 10.6 points. UNLV is averaging 75.4 points and they are shooting 45.9 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 64.1 points and their opponents are shooting 38.9 percent. UNLV has played the 107th ranked schedule going 0-3 against teams with a RPI of 50 or better and 1-1 against teams with a RPI between 51-100.
Fresno State is 4-0 against the spread against the Mountain West, 0-4 against the spread following a win, and 0-5 against the spread after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game. UNLV is 6-0 against the spread following a win, 8-0-1 against the spread in their last nine games, and 6-0 against the spread in their last six road games.
UNLV is playing their best basketball of the season and I look for it to continue here.
