Texas Rangers vs. Minnesota Twins

The Texas Rangers continue to lead the AL West and they helped themselves on Saturday with a win over the Twins. A.J. Pierzynski had two hits and Ian Kinsler, Alex Rios, and Elvis Andrus all had hits, as the Rangers scored two runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Matt Garza allowed three hits and a run, while striking out nine over 7.0 innings but it was Joe Nathan who got the win to go to 5-2 on the season. For Sunday’s game, the Rangers start Travis Blackley, who is coming off of a win in his last start. For the season, Blackley has allowed eight hits and five runs, while striking out six over 10 innings for a 1-0 record and a 4.50 ERA.
The Minnesota Twins knocked off the Tigers on Friday, but they were unable to make it back and they lost on Saturday. Brian Dozier had two hits, including a home run, Clete Thomas had two hits, and Trevor Plouffe had a hit as the Twins scored one run off of five hits. Starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey allowed six hits and a run, while striking out seven over 7.0 innings. Caleb Thielbar took the loss and fell to 2-2 on the year. For Sunday’s game, the Twins start Kevin Correia, who has lost four of his last five decisions. For the season, Correia has allowed 185 hits and 74 earned runs, while striking out 88 over 154.1 innings for an 8-10 record and a 4.32 ERA.
Texas is 5-1 in their last six games as a home favorite, 24-7 in their last 31 games overall, and 3-7 in their last 10 games against the AL Central. Minnesota is 1-4 in their last five games following a loss, 1-7 in their last eight games overall, and 1-6 in Correia’s last seven starts. Minnesota is 5-13 in the last 18 meetings of these two.
The Rangers are a big favorite here and it is simply that time of year where we need to pay a price if we want to be on a favorite.
