South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Vanderbilt Commodores
The South Carolina Gamecocks and the Vanderbilt Commodores face off in Columbia on Saturday in a SEC battle in week three-college football action. The Gamecocks are -13.5 point favorites over the Commodores with an over/under point total set at 48.5.
The South Carolina Gamecocks are licking their wounds after losing last week to rival Georgia in Athens. While the Gamecocks know taking a SEC loss, especially early on, isn’t a death sentence, Steve Spurrier’s team also knows they have little room for error going forward. QB Connor Shaw has elevated his game completing 60 percent of his passes and rushing for 118 yards without turning the ball over. Mike Davis is averaging 9.4 yards per carry with two touchdowns and Brandon Wilds is averaging 4.9 yards per carry in limited action. Nick Jones has 10 catches with two touchdowns, Shaq Roland has five catches, and Bruce Ellington has been quiet with just two catches. Defensively South Carolina allowed 41 points to Georgia, which inflates the defensive number negatively, but the Gamecocks have a solid defense. T.J. Gurley has 20 tackles, Kaiwan Lewis has 15 tackles, and Jadaveon Clowney record his first sack of the year last week. South Carolina has bounced back before and look for them to be focused again this week.
The Vanderbilt Commodores have gone from bottom feeder of the SEC to a bowl regular but they face a huge test in this one. QB Austyn Carta-Samuels has completed 60.3 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Jerron Seymour has rushed for a 6.0 yards per carry average, Brian Kimrow as a 5.6 yard per carry average, and Wesley Tate has two touchdowns. Jordan Mathews is one of the better-kept secrets in college football with 16 catches and two touchdowns, Jonathan Krause has eight receptions, and Jordan Cunningham has seven catches. The Vanderbilt defense allows 145.5 rushing yards per game and 168.5 passing yards. Andre Hall as 11 tackles, Javon Marshall has 11 tackles, and Kenny Ladler has 10 tackles. This is a huge game for Vandy and their second SEC game this far this season.
South Carolina is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 home games, 7-3 against the spread following a loss, and 9-1 against the spread in their last 10 games following a loss. Vanderbilt is 4-0 against the spread in their last four road games, 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games, and 6-0 against the spread following a win. Vandy is 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five games at South Carolina.
Vandy has some off of the field issues which affects their depth and while they are still a good team, they can’t afford that kind of hit when it comes to playing the better teams and they feel those affects here.
