Auburn Tigers vs. Arkansas St. Red Wolves

The Auburn Tigers and the Arkansas State Red Wolves face off on Saturday in a battle of Gus Malzahn inspired teams. The Tigers are -13 point favorites over the Red Wolves with an over/under point total set at 63.
The Auburn Tigers won their season opener and the first game of the Gus Malzahn era as head Coach as they held on to beat Washington State on Saturday. QB Nick Marshall completed barley over 50 percent of his passes for just 99 yards but he avoided mistakes that ended up being the difference in this one. Corey Grant ran for 149 yards including a 75-yard touchdown and Tre Mason ran for 73 yards and a touchdown and he also returned a kickoff for 100 yards and a touchdown. Sammie Coates and Quan Bray each had three catches, as the Auburn passing game didn’t do more than they had to. The Auburn defense still needs a lot of work as they allowed 464 yards but they came up with three big interceptions, one more than they had all of last season, which proved to be the difference. Jonathan Mincey had eight tackles, Ryan Smith had seven tackles, and Robenson Therezie had seven tackles and two interceptions. Auburn can’t expect to give up big yards all season and continue to win but they are at least off on the right foot with a win in 2013.
The Arkansas State Red Wolves opened the Bryan Harslin era by pounding Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their opener; of course Harslin takes over for Gus Malzahn who took over this week’s opponent, Auburn. Arkansas State QB Adam Kennedy didn’t need to do much in the opener completing nine of 12 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown. A-State had an epic day on the grounds rushing for 509 yards with four backs going over 100 yards each with David Oku Sirgregory Thornton, and Fredi Knighten each also scoring two touchdowns and Michael Gordon had one. Julian Jones and R.J. Fleming each had two catches with Jones scoring a touchdown. The Red Wolves defense wasn’t tested giving up 12 rushing yards and 173 total yards. Ryan Carrethers had eight tackles including 1.5 sacks Qushaun Lee had seven tackles, and Darius Dunaway had five tackles including 1.5 sacks. Arkansas State would love to beat Mallzahn and send him a message that he might have made a mistake leaving them.
Auburn is 5-12 against the spread in their last 17 games, 3-8 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 1-6 against the spread following a win. Arkansas State is 6-0 against the spread following a win, 20-7 against the spread in their last 27 games, and 11-5 against the spread against the SEC.
Expect the scoreboard to get a workout in this one and for my pick I like the over.
