New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees face off on Saturday as they meet for game two of their all-important series. The Rays are -158 favorites over the Yankees with an over/under run total set at 8.
The Tampa Bay Rays trailed early on Friday against the Yankees but the deficit was short lived and they never looked back getting the win. Ben Zobrist, Evan Longoria, Matt Joyce, and Jose Lobaton each hit home runs as the Rays scored seven runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Chris Archer allowed four hits and two runs while striking out four over 7.0 innings to get the win and go to 7-5 on the season. For Saturday’s game the Rays start David Price who has been rock solid since returning from the DL In early July. For the season Price has allowed 125 hits and 48 earned runs while striking out 106 over 131.1 innings for a 7-5 record and a 3.29 ERA.
The New York Yankees have put themselves into a position where they can make a run at the post season but they didn’t help themselves on Friday getting trounced by the Rays. Brett Gardener and Eduardo Nunez each had two hits and Alfonso Soriano had a hit as the Yankees scored two runs on five hits in all. Starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda had a tough night as he allowed nine hits and seven earned runs while striking out three over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 11-9 on the year. For Saturday’s game the Yankees start C.C. Sabathia who has won his last two starts. For the season Sabathia has allowed 183 hits and 92 earned runs while striking out 145 over 171.1 innings for a 11-10 record and a 4.83 ERA.
The Rays are 7-2 in their last nine games, 21-7 in their last 28 home games, and 6-1 in Price’s last seven starts. New York is 5-1 in their last six games, 2-6 in their last eight road games, and 2-6 in Sabathia’s last eight starts as an underdog. New York is 5-15 in their last 20 games in Tampa Bay.
Price and Sabathia seem to face off fairly often when these two teams lock up and Price usually gets the best of it with the Rays winning seven of the last eight times this matchup has happened. I don’t love the price on Price but the Rays are just in a better spot here at home.
