New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians

The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians face off on Monday at Yankee Stadium for game one of their series. The Yankees are -1456 favorites over the Indians with an over/under total set at 8.5.
The New York Yankees still have several key players on the DL but they still continue to contend in the AL East. The Yankees are 3-7 in their last 10 games, 16-13 at home this season, and they are three games back in the AL East. As a team the Yankees are hitting .246 with Robinson Cano hitting .291, Brett Gardener hitting .258, and Ichiro Suzuki hitting .257. The Yankees opponents are hitting .257 with New York pitching staff having an ERA of 3.75. For game one against the Indians the Yankees start Andy Pettitte who makes his return from the 15 day disabled list. For the season Pettitte has allowed 49 hits and 21 earned runs while striking out 39 over 49.1 innings for a 4-3 record and a 3.83 ERA.
The Cleveland Indians are contending in the AL Central but they have failed to take advantage of recent chances to make a move in the standings. The Indians are 3-7 in their last 10 games, 12-14 on the road this season, and they are .5 games behind the Tigers in the NL Central standings. As a team the Indians are hitting .260 with Michael Bourn hitting .301, Michael Brantley hitting .299, and Carlos Santana hitting .283. The Indians opponents are hitting .245 and the Cleveland pitching staff has an ERA of 4.26. For game one in the Bronx the Indians start Justin Masterson who has pitched like an ALL Star this season. For the year Masterson has allowed 63 hits and 28 earned runs while striking out 83 over 82 innings for a 8-3 record and a 3.07 ERA.
New York is 7-1 in their last eight games against the AL Central, 5-1 in their last six game one of a series, and 41-20 in Pettitte’s last 61 starts. Cleveland is 20-41 in their last 61 road games, 1-5 in their last six games as an underdog, and 7-2 in Masterson’s last nine starts against the AL East. Cleveland is 16-37 in their last 53 games in New York.
While Pettitte is a first ballot Hall of Fame pitcher, he also hasn’t been consistent of late and getting Masterson as dog here is well worth the play.
