The Detroit Tigers and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Thursday at Comerica Park as they play the rubber game of their series in Detroit. The Tigers are -177 favorites over the Rays with an over/under run total set at 9.
The Detroit Tigers lead the American League Central but their lead shrank a little on Wednesday as they fell to the Rays. Alex Avilla had two hits and Andy Dirks, Prince Fielder and Omar Infante all had hits as the Tigers failed to score on six hits. Starting pitcher Doug Fister allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out four over 8.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 5-3 on the season. For game Thursday’s game the Tigers start Max Scherzer who is still unbeaten on the year. For the season Scherzer has allowed 50 hits and 29 earned runs while striking out 91 over 76.1 innings for a 7-0 record and a 3.42 ERA.
The Tampa Bay Rays were crushed by the Tigers on Tuesday but they bounced back on Wednesday with the win. On Wednesday Evan Longoria had two hits and James Loney, Sam Fuld, and Ben Zobrist each had hits as the Mariners scored three runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Alex Cobb allowed five hits and struck out three over 7.2 scoreless innings but didn’t factor in the decision as Joel Peralta got the win to go to 1-2 on the season and Fernando Rodney earned his 12th save of the season. For Thursday’s game the Rays start Roberto Hernandez who got a win in his last start. For the season Hernandez has allowed 57 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 50 over 57.1 innings for a 3-5 record and a 4.87 ERA.
Detroit is 13-5 in their last 18 games against the AL East, 2-6 in their last eight games overall, and 7-2 in Scherzer’s last nine starts as a favorite. Tampa Bay is 8-2 in their last 10 games overall, 10-4 in their last 14 road games, and 5-10 in their last 15 games as an underdog. The Rays are 4-13 in the last 17 meetings of these two.
The Tigers with Scherzer are just a huge favorite here and to me this game is either a no play or a chance to jump on the dog which what I will do here.
