Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays
The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays face off on Tuesday afternoon in game one of their series and the first game of a double header. The Red Sox are -126 favorites over the Rays with an over/under run total set at 9.5.
The Red Sox lead the American League East but they are far from in the clear with the entire division in hot pursuit. The Red Sox are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 21-14 at home this season, and they have a 1.5 game lead in the AL East. As a team the Red Sox are hitting .268 with Dustin Pedroia hitting .319, David Ortiz hitting .294, and Daniel Nava hitting .288. The Red Sox opponents are hitting .245 and the Boston pitching staff has a 3.84 ERA with the starters at 3.79 and the bullpen at 3.94. For game one on Monday the Red Sox start Felix Doubront who had a no decision against the Rays earlier this season at Tampa Bay. For the season Doubront has allowed 75 hits and 36 earned runs while striking out 68 over 66 innings for a 4-3 record and a 4.91 ERA.
The Tampa Bay Rays have hit a bit of a funk of late but they are still very much in the mix in the AL East race. The Rays are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 15-17 on the road this season, and they are five games back in the AL East. As a team the Rays are hitting .258 with Evan Longoria hitting .306, James Loney hitting .301, and Ben Zobrist and Matt Joyce both hitting .270. The Rays opponets are hitting .248 and the Tampa bay pitching staff has an ERA of 4.37 with the starters at 4.62 and the bullpen at 3.92. For game one on Monday the Rays start Christopher Archer who has lost two of hos three starts this year. For the season Archer has allowed 13 hits and eight earned runs while striking out 13 over 15 records for a 1-2 record and a 4.80 era.
Boston is 8-3 in their last 11 home games, 21-43 against a team with a winning record, and 5-2 in Doubront’s last seven starts against the AL East. Tampa Bay is 7-3 in their last 10 road games against a team with a winning record, 1-4 in their last five games overall, and 0-4 in Archer’s last four starts as an underdog. Boston is 4-1 in the last five meetings of these two.
Doubront has been serviceable but he has pitched well against the Rays historically and while I haven’t been a fan of the Red Sox against a team with a winning record I do like them in this one.
