Miami Marlins vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
The Marlins look to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Diamondbacks as they face off on Sunday. The Diamondbacks are -157 favorites over the Marlins with an over/under run total set at 7.5.
The Miami Marlins have the worst record in baseball and on Saturday the bats once again showed part of the reason why. Adeiny Hechavarria, Michael Ozuna, and Chris Coghlan all had hits but the Marlins failed to score as the three hits were the only offense they had. Starting pitcher Tim Koehler allowed three hits and a run while striking out seven over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-2 on the year. For Sunday’s game Miami starts Ricky Nolasco who has lost his last thee starts. For the season Nolasco has allowed 52 hits and 26 earned runs while striking out 39 over 53.1 innings for a 2-5 record and a 5.39 ERA.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have the lead in the National League West and are a win away from a sweep in this series in Miami. On Saturday Gerardo Parra hit a home run and Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Ross, and Miguel Montero all had hits as the one run on four hits was enough to get the win. Starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy went the distance allowing three hits and striking out five to earn his first win of the year to go to 1-3. For Sunday’s game the Diamondbacks start Wade Miley who has lost two of his last three starts. For the season Miley has allowed 47 hits and 20 earned runs while striking out 35 over 48 innings for a 3-2 record and a 3.75 ERA.
Miami is 5-17 in their last 22 home games, 1-7 in their last eight games against the NL West, and 2-10 in Nolasco’s last 12 starts. Arizona is 5-0 in their last five road games, 8-3 in their last 11 games against the NL East, and 20-6 in Miley’s last 26 starts against a team with a losing record. Arizona is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings of these two.
Arizona is the big favorite here and no reason not to believe that they close out this series and get the sweep as the Marlins look directionless and the D-Backs are looking more like contenders every day.
