Tampa Bay Rays vs. Oakland Athletics

The Tampa Bay Rays and the Oakland A’s face off on Friday at Tropicana Field for game one of their series. The Rays are -109 favorites over the Athletics with an over/under run total set at 7.5.
The Tampa Bay Rays are off to a slow start and while they have the ability to compete it just hasn’t translated into a lot of wins. The Rays are 2-8 in their last 10 games, 3-3 at home this season, and they are in last place in the AL East, six games behind the Red Sox. As a team the Rays are hitting .212 with James Loney hitting .289, Evan Longoria hitting .283, and Ben Zobrist hitting .269. The Rays opponets are hitting .241 and the Tampa Bay pitching staff has an ERA of 4.14. For game one the Rays start Alex Cobb who is coming off of a loss in his last outing. For the season Cobb has allowed 11 hits and three earned runs while striking out 12 over 14 innings of work for a 1.93 ERA.
The Oakland A’s had Friday off but thus far this season that have picked up where they left off surprising just about everyone. The Athletics are 8-2 in their last 10 games, 6-0 on the road this season, and they have a 2.5 game lead in the AL West. As a team the A’s are hitting .269 with Jed Lowrie hitting .373, Coco Crisp hitting .333, and John Jaso hitting .295. The A’s opponents are hitting .252 and the Oakland pitching staff has an ERA of 3.55. For game one Oakland starts Bret Anderson who has lost two of his last three starts this year. For the season Anderson has allowed 17 hits and nine earned runs while striking out 18 over 18.2 innings of work for a 4.34 ERA.
Tampa Bay is 10-4 in their last 14 home games, 18-5 in their last 23 games against a left handed starter, and 10-3 in Cobb’s last 13 starts. Oakland is 4-0 in their last four game one of a series, 47-20 in their last 67 games overall, and 2-12 in Anderson’s last 14 starts as an underdog. Oakland has won four of their last five games at Tampa Bay.
It’s not that I see the Rays as being all that bad it is just Oakland has a knack for winning tight games and this looks like it could be one of those so my pick here is Oakland.
