New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals
The New York Mets and the Washington Nationals face off on Friday for game one of their series at Citi Field. The Nationals are -107 favorites over the Mets with an over/under run total set at 6.5.
The New York Mets are finally home from what was supposed to be a 10 game road trip but due to weather it ended up being eight games. The Mets lost their last three games, are 5-5 in their last 10, and they are 4-2 at home this season. As a team the Mets are hitting .272 with Daniel Murphy hitting .352, David Wright hitting .327, and John Buck hitting .300. The Mets opponents are hitting .254 and the New York pitching staff has an ERA of 4.08. For game one against the Nationals New York starts Matt Harvey who is unbeaten this season and is easily the ace of the Mets pitching staff. For the season Harvey has allowed six hits and two runs while striking out 25 over 22 innings for a 3-0 record and a 0.82 ERA.
The Washington Nationals are expected to contend for the NL East title once again this season and while they have played well thus far they clearly have work to do to reach those goals. The nationals are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 3-3 on the road this season, and 3.5 games behind the Braves in the National League East standings. As a team the Nationals are hitting .260 with Bryce Harper hitting .364, Denard Span hitting 313, and Ian Desmond hitting .310. The Nationals opponents are hitting .269 and the Washington pitching staff has an ERA of 4.07. For game one in New York Washington starts Stephen Strasburg who has the numbers but who hasn’t been getting enough support to convert it into wins. For the season Strasburg has allowed 17 hits and six earned runs while striking out 15 over 18.1 innings of work for a 1-2 record and a 2.95 ERA.
New York is 2-6 in their last eight games overall, 7-20 in their last 27 games as an underdog, and 1-4 in Harvey’s last five home starts. Washington is 44-20 in their last 64 games as a favorite, 5-1 in their last six games following an of day, and 27-13 in Strasburg’s last 40 starts as a favorite. Washington is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings of these two.
The total in this one is set at 6.5 but that looks to be too low and my first pick is going to be on the over.
