Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Penn St. Nittany Lions

The Minnesota Golden Gophers and Penn State Nittany Lions both try to follow up on big upset wins as they face off on Saturday in Big Ten College hoops. The Golden Gophers are -16.5 point favorites over the Nittany Lions with an over/under point total set at 128.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers are coming off of an upset win over the Indiana Hoosiers and despite going 2-4 in their last six games it could be the win that cements their spot in the NCAA Tournament. Minnesota is 7-8 in the Big 10, 14-2 at home this season, and they have played the number one ranked schedule in the country this season. As a team Minnesota is averaging 69.4 points, 14.9 assists, and they are shooting 44.4 percent while defensively they are allowing 62 points, 11.9 assists, and their opponents are shooting 39.9 percent. Andre Hollins is averaging 13.6 points, Austin Hollins is averaging 11 points, and Rodney Williams is averaging 10.8 points and 5.1 rebounds. This is Minnesota’s last home game of the season.
The Penn State Nittany Lions are coming off of their biggest win of the year and their first Big 10 win of the season as they beat Michigan. Penn State is 1-14 in the Big Ten, 0-8 on the road this season, and they have played the 24th ranked schedule in the nation. As a team Penn State is averaging 62 points, 9.8 assists, and they are shooting 39.2 percent while defensively they are allowing 68 points, 11.9 assists, and their opponents are shooting 42.6 percent. D.J. Newbill is averaging 15.9 points and 5.4 rebounds, Jermaine Marshall is averaging 15.4 points, and Sasa Borovnjak is averaging 7.0 points. Penn State has this and their next game at Northwestern to try and get that elusive road win.
Minnesota is 6-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 1-5-1 against the spread in their last seven games overall, and 13-5-1 against the spread following a game where they covered the point spread. Penn State is 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games, 4-0 against the spread in their last four games overall, and 5-0 against the spread against a team with a winning record. The home team is 13-6-1 against the spread in the last 20 meetings of these two.
This just looks like a lot of points and while I like Minnesota at home they haven’t been playing well enough overall to justify this number.

Pick
