Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Villanova Wildcats
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Villanova Wildcats tangle Monday night from Philadelphia. The Wildcats are -10 point favorites over the Scarlet Knights with an over/under point total set at 130.5.
Rutgers fell to 4-9 in big east play this past weekend as they became only DePaul’s second conference win as the Blue Demons took them down at home 75-69. This contest was deadlocked for most of the game before DePaul pulled away late. The Scarlet Knights were hurt even further when leading scorer Eli Carter went down with what has been ruled a broken fibula that will sideline him for the rest of the season. Myles Mack had 28 points for Rutgers but was pretty much all alone as the Scarlet Knights supporting cast was non-existent. Without Carter the rest of the way, it will be hard to put much faith in the Scarlet Knights down the stretch.
Villanova got a huge conference win with a 70-61 win over Uconn on the road that moved them back above .500 to 7-6. The hot shooting Wildcats showed up in this one as they buried 9 3’pointers, led by Ryan Arcidiacano’s 5 3’s and 25 points on the night. The Wildcats slowed down the UConn attack during a key stretch in the second half that saw them bury a few three’s while the Huskies went cold. Villanova also won handedly on the glass by a 40-24 advantage – an area where they have been very inconsistent this year.
Rutgers is 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 home games and Villanova is 6-2 against the spread in their last 8 Monday games.
I expect Villanova to be riding high after their big win at Storrs and things have hit rock bottom for Rutgers with a loss to lowly DePaul and the loss of leading scorer Eli Carter for the season. Look for Villanova to overwhelm the Scarlet Knights from deep and get the cover in front of the home crowd.
