Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Pittsburgh Panthers

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish visit the Pitt Panthers in big east action Monday. The Panthers are -10.5 point favorites over the Fighting Irish with an over/under point total set at 123.5.
Notre Dame gets back to action quickly after getting defeated fairly soundly on the road against surging Providence this past weekend. The Irish were outhustled and shut down offensively by the Friars in the 71-54 loss. Notre Dame got pedestrian outings from key contributors Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins who combined for 16 points on 5-17 shooting. Jack Cooley led the Irish with 12 and 10 but got most of his points on put back buckets off his guards misses. Credit Providence’s strong perimeter D as arguably the main reason they got the easy win as they flustered the Irish from the perimeter all day forcing them into 1-14 shooting from deep.
Pitt also gets back on the court quickly after being defeated by Marquette at the Bradley Center 79-69 in a game that had top of the conference standings implications. Marquette used their strong home court advantage to fuel their offensive attack and the Panthers were unable to match their intensity all night. Lamar Patterson had 19 and Tray Woodall had 10 but no other Panther was able to reach double figures. Pitt had 18 assists that largely came in the second half as they tried to rally but fell just short. With the loss the Panthers move to 8-5 in the big east.
Some trends to consider – Notre Dame is 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 games overall and Pitt is 14-5-1 against the spread in their last 20 Monday games.
This game looms large for both teams and I expect a very close contest throughout. While I think Pitt will win the game outright, I like both Jerian Grand and Atkins to bounce back from their struggles over the weekend to keep this one close and give the Irish a shot in the end. Notre Dame with the cover here in a big Monday duel.
