South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Vanderbilt Commodores
The South Carolina Gamecocks and the Vanderbilt Commodores face off on Saturday in Columbia in SEC college basketball action. The Gamecocks are -2.5 point favorites over the Commodores.
The South Carolina Gamecocks got their first win of their SEC schedule on Wednesday as they knocked off LSU as 10 point underdogs. South Carolina is 7-3 at home this season but they haven’t been tested often playing the 332nd ranked schedule in the country. As a team South Carolina is averaging 73.1 points, 13.6 assists, and they are shooting 45.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 68.8 points, 12.7 assists, and their opponents are shooting 43.9 percent. Brenton Williams is averaging 11.8 points, Bruce Ellington is averaging 10.7 points, and Lakeem Jackson is averaging 9.9 points and 7.2 rebounds. With Lashay Page academically ineligible the rest of the Gamecocks appear to be stepping up.
The Vanderbilt Commodores are off to a 0-3 start in SEC play and it looks like a full scale rebuild in Nashville. Kevin Stallings has put together winner after winner in Vandy but the challenge this year may be too much. As a team Vanderbilt is averaging 59.1 points, 11.1 assists, and they are shooting 40.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.3 points, 10.9 assists, and their opponents are shooting 42.4 percent. Kedren Johnson is averaging 15.9 points, Kyle Fuller is averaging 10.5 points, and Rod Odom is averaging 9.4 points. Vanderbilt’s struggles on the boards has carried into their overall performance.
South Carolina is 2-6 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 1-4 against the spread in their last five road games, and 1-6 against the spread in their last seven home games against a team with a losing road record. Vanderbilt is 0-4 against the spread in their last four Saturday games, 7-3 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, and 4-0 against the spread following a double digit home loss. The road team has covered the spread in 10 of the last 14 meetings of these two.
I’m going with the Commodores to pull off the minor upset here.
