The two bottom teams in the Big Ten face on Saturday as the Penn State Nittany Lions host the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Nittany Lions are -3.5 point favorites over the Cornhuskers with an over/under point total set at 117.
The Penn State Nittany Lions are still looking for their first Big Ten win of the year going 0-5 in conference play including three conference home losses. The closest PSU has been in Big 10 play is nine points twice but double digit losses are becoming the norm. As a team Penn State is averaging 62.1 points, 9.4 assists, and they are shooting 39.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 66.8 points, 11.7 assists, and their opponents are shooting 42.1 percent. D.J. Newbill is averaging 15.6 points and 5.9 rebounds, Jermaine Marshall is averaging 15 points and 4.6 rebounds, and Ross Travis is averaging 6.9 points and 7.4 rebounds. Penn State’s season went down the tubes when they lost Tim Frazier for the year.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are still looking for their first Big Ten win but like their opponent it has been them on the wrong end of a blowout in most of their games. Nebraska is 1-4 overall on the road but they have played the seventh ranked overall schedule. As a team Nebraska is averaging 58.1 points, 10.2 assists, and they are shooting 41.1 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.2 points, 10.2 assists, and their opponents are shooting 43 percent. Dylan Talley is averaging 13.2 points and 5.6 rebounds, Ray Gallegos is averaging 13.1 points, and Brandon Ubel is averaging 12.1 points and 6.1 rebounds. Nebraska might not have a better chance to get a conference win before PSU visits Lincoln on February 9th.
Penn State is 2-6-1 against the spread in their last nine Big Ten games, 3-0-1 against the spread in their last four Saturday games, and 5-2-1 against the spread against a team with a road winning percentage less than .400. Nebraska is 4-11 against the spread against the Big Ten, 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 road games, and 1-4 against the spread against a team with a losing record.
Neither of these teams can be counted on for much but it looks like it will be close or at least could go either way so starting with points seems to be a good place to be.
