Michigan Wolverines vs. Northwestern Wildcats
The Michigan Wolverines and the Northwestern Wildcats face off on Wednesday in a Big Ten college basketball match up. The Wolverines are -19.5 point favorites over the Wildcats with an over/under point total set at 130.
The Michigan Wolverines are the new number one team in the nation but that position hasn’t treated their predecessors well as most have lost immediately. Michigan is 12-0 at home this season and 6-1 in the Big Ten while playing the 35th ranked schedule in the country. As a team Michigan is averaging 78.5 points, 15.6 assists, and they are shooting 51 percent from the floor while defensively they are allowing 59.2 points, 12.1 assists, and their opponents shoot 40.4 percent. Trey Burke is averaging 17.9 points and 7.1 assists, Tim Hardaway Jr. is averaging 15.9 points and 5.2 rebounds, Nik Stauskas is averaging 12.8 points, and Glenn Robinson III is averaging 12 points and 6.0 rebounds. Michigan has been rock solid all season but there is a lot of basketball to be played between now and March.
The Northwestern Wildcats are a better team than many expected they would be this season but it hasn’t meant consistent winning. Northwestern is 3-2 on the road this season and 1-4 against teams ranked in the top 25 while playing the 42nd ranked schedule overall. As a team Northwestern is averaging 64.2 points, 15.1 assists, and they are shooting 41.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.5 points, 12.3 assists, and their opponents are shooting 41.3 percent. Reggie Hearn is averaging 14 points, Dave Sobolewski is averaging 11.5 points, and Jared Swopshire is averaging 9.7 points and 6.6 rebounds. Northwestern doesn’t look like a contender for a spot in the NCAA Tournament but a win in Ann Arbor could change that.
Michigan is 28-11-1 against the spread in their last 40 games against the Big Ten, 35-16-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 4-0 against the spread in their last four home games against a team with a winning road record. Northwestern is 4-1 against the spread in their last five Wednesday games, 4-1 against the spread following a loss, and 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Northwestern is 6-13 against the spread in the last 19 meetings of these two.
The line is in the sky for this one and while Michigan is a force this season it’s tough to lay this kind of number in this spot and I’ll take Northwestern and the points
Northwestern Wildcats +19.5 Michigan Wolverines
