The Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars face off Sunday in Miami in an in state battle of rebuilding AFC teams. The Dolphins are -7 point favorites over the Jaguars with an over/under point total set at 37.
The Miami Dolphins have improved on the field but they aren’t a playoff caliber football team yet and have lost four of their last five games. Ryan Tannehill has completed 57.3 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions while getting sacked 25 times. Reggie Bush is averaging 4.4 yards per carry with five touchdowns and Daniel Thomas is averaging 3.5 yards per carry with four touchdowns. Brian Hartline has 62 catches, Davone Bess has 61 catches, and Anthony Fasano has 30 catches. Defensively the Dolphins have allowed 21.2 points per game, 102.1 rushing yards, and 250.6 passing yards with nine interceptions and 37 sacks. Karlos Dansby has 105 tackles, Kevin Burnett has 83 tackles, and Cameron Wake has 14 sacks. While the Dolphins should be drafting high once again they could use a strong finish to gain some momentum heading into next season.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking like a contender for the number one pick in the NFL Draft which goes to the team with the worst record in football. With Blaine Gabbert sidelined it has been Chad Henne at QB completing 51.6 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and five interceptions while being sacked 18 times. With injuries in the backfield to Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashard Jennings, Montell Owens is getting the bulk of the carries and he is averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Injuries have taken their toll on the Jaguars receivers as well when Justin Blackmon remains the top option with 45 catches, Marcedes Lewis has 38 catches and four touchdowns, and Jordan Shipley has been added and he has been a contributor. Defensively the Jaguars allow 27.6 points per game, 145.7 rushing yards, and 248.8 passing yards with 10 interceptions and 14 sacks. Paul Posluszny has 112 tackles, Russell Allen has 108 tackles, and Dawan Landry has 88 tackles. Jacksonville is still looking for the move that will get the organization jump started.
Miami is 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 games following a loss, 20-42-2 against the spread in their last 64 home games against a team with a losing road record, and 24-52-1 in their last 77 home games. Jacksonville is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven road games, 5-2 against the spread after scoring less than 15 points their previous game, and 0-3-1 against the spread in their last four games after allowing less than 150 yards passing their previous game. The road team is 3-1-1 against the spread in the last five meetings of these two.
The Dolphins are much further ahead than the Jaguars and we should see that clearly here.
