Brown Bears vs. Providence Friars

The Brown Bears and the Providence Friars meet up on Friday Night for a college hoops battle between two local teams.  The Friars are -13 point favorites over the Bears with an over/under point total set at 130.5.

The Brown Bears are off to a tough start to the season and have lost their last three games in a row. Brown has played the 319th ranked schedule in the nation but with no real power in the Ivy League this season it should be wide open once conference play begins. As a team Brown is averaging 61.1 points, 13.3 assists, and they are shooting 38.9 percent while defensively they are allowing 68.1 points, 15 assists, and their opponents are shooting 46.7 percent. Sean McGonagill is averaging 15.4 points, Matt Sullivan is averaging 14.4 points, and Rafael Maia is averaging 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds. Brown hasn’t beaten a team with a RPI better than 200 this year.

The Providence Friars have had a few off years recently but this season they look like they are once again relevant. Ed Cooley’s Friars are coming off of a tough three point loss at Boston College  and this is their last game before they start conference play on January 2nd. As a team Providence is averaging 69.4 points, 14.2 assists, and they are shooting 43.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 57.8 points, 10.5 assists, and their opponents are shooting 37.3 percent. Bryce Cotton is averaging 22 points, Kadeem Batts is averaging 16.6 points and 7.8 rebounds, and LaDontae Henton is averaging 15.5 points and 8.3 rebounds. Providence should surprise some teams in the Big East this year but they are a better team with Vincent Council who has been injured.

Brown is 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games against the Big East, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven home games against a team with a losing road record, and 1-9 against the spread in their last 10 home games following three or more consecutive road games. Providence is 5-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 2-5 against the spread following a loss, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five games against Brown. The home team has covered in four of the last five meetings of these two.

This is just a different Providence team than we have seen in recent years and look for them to punish Brown here.
