Miami Marlins vs. Cincinnati Reds

One of the worst teams in the National League hosts one of the best as the Miami Marlins and the Cincinnati Reds face off on Friday for game one of their series.  The Reds are -140 favorites over the Marlins with an over/under run total set at 8.5.

The Miami Marlins have lost their last three games but it’s the 78 other losses they have taken this year that makes it all the worse. The Marlins are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 32-37 at home this season, and they are 26.5 games back in the NL East. As a team the Marlins are hitting .245 with Giancarlo Stanton hitting .283, Jose Reyes hitting .277, and Carlos Lee hitting .261. As a team the Marlins pitching staff has an ERA of 4.17 with the starters at 4.19 and the bullpen at 4.11. For game one against the Reds Miami starts Jacob Turner who has lost his only two decisions since being traded from Detroit. Since being acquired by Miami Turner has allowed 14 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 14 over 17 innings of work for a 5.29 ERA.

The Cincinnati Reds have run away with the National League Central and should be clinching a spot in the post season in the near future. The Reds are 6-4 in their last 10 games, 40-29 on the road this season, and they have an 11.5 game lead in the NL Central, the largest current lead of any division leader. As a team the Reds are hitting .255 with Joey Votto hitting .339, Brandon Phillips hitting .295, and Jay Bruce hitting .261 with 33 home runs. As a team the Reds pitching staff has an ERA of 3.41 with the starters at 3.74 and the bullpen at 2.64. For game one at Miami Cincinnati starts Bronson Arroyo who has won his last five decisions. For the season Arroyo has allowed 180 hits and 72 earned runs while striking out 112 over 117 innings of work for a 3.66 ERA.

Miami is 4-9 in their last 13 games following a loss, 2-6 in their last eight home games, and 1-4 in their last five games overall. Cincinnati is 19-7 in their last 26 road games, 43-19 in their last 62 games overall, and 6-0 in Arroyo’s last six starts.

The total is set at 8.5 and I have this one going over that number.
