Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears
The Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears kick off week two of NFL Football as the meet at Lambeau Field on Thursday Night for a NFC battle. The Packers are -6 point favorites over the Bears with an over/under point total set at 50.
The Green Bay Packers were the only NFC North team to lose their season opener as all four teams opened at home. QB Aaron Rogers looked very much like we are accustomed to seeing him completing 68.2 percent of his passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns but he also threw an interception and was sacked three times. Rodgers felt the heat because of a non-existent Packers running game as Cedric Benson gained just 18 yards on the ground on nine carries with all other rushing yards being gained by Rodgers scrambling, just 45 total years rushing. Randall Cobb has moved into a primary role as a pass catcher grabbing nine receptions while Jermichael Finley had seven catches and Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson had five each. Defensively Green Bay was gouged on the ground for 186 yards while allowing 191 through the air but they did have four sacks. A.J. Hawk had 14 tackles, D.J. Smith had nine tackles, and Clay Mathews had 2.5 sacks. The Packers won last year by outscoring their opponents but they are going to need to score points in bunches if they hope to do it that way again this season.
The Chicago Bears looked impressive in week one of the NFL season but of course they were playing the Indianapolis Colts who had the worst record in football last season. QB Jay Cutler showed few signs of rust after missing the latter part of last season as he completed 60 percent of his passes for 333 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Matt Forte looked in midseason form rushing for 80 yards and a touchdown and Michael Bush added two touchdowns. Brandon Marshall had a huge first game with the Bears as he caught nine passes for 119 yards and a touchdown and Alshon Jeffrey and Earl Bennett had three catches each. Defensively the Bears allowed 63 yards on the ground and 293 yards in the air but many of those were in garbage time when the game was well in hand but they also had three interceptions and three sacks. Major Wright and Kelvin Hayden had seven tackles each while Henry Melton had two sacks and Tim Jennings had two interceptions. It is early but the Bears look like they are going to be a handful on both sides of the ball this year.
Green Bay is 9-0 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, 4-0 against the spread in their last four games against NFC North teams, and 8-2 against the spread against teams with a winning record. Chicago is 5-1 against the spread following a win, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games against NFC teams, and 9-3-1 against the spread in their last 13 games against a team with a losing home record. The favorite has covered in five of the last seven meetings of these two.
The NFC North has turned into a high flying offensive division and we should see some fireworks in this one leading me to believe it goes over the total.
